This small table antique Chinese table is known as a kang table. During the cold months of winter, domestic life was predominantly spent around a kang, a heated hollow brick platform powered by heat from the stove. People could recline in this area on mats and would use these tables for drinking tea, playing cards, or other games. The kang table was so commonly used that it is notably absent from any literature.
This example is made from less commonly used cypress wood and is from Shanxi province in Northern China. It features cabriole legs ending in hoof feet. Kang tables are often used in the west as small coffee tables.
